We aren’t born with the skills that enable us to control impulses, make plans, and stay focused. We are born with the potential to develop these capacities—or not—depending on our experiences during in- fancy, throughout childhood, and into adoles- cence.
Our genes provide the blueprint, but the early environments in which children live leave a lasting signature on those genes. Children need to develop these skills, too, in order to meet the many challenges they will face on the road to becoming productive, contribut- ing members of their communities.
Children are already learning at birth, and they develop and learn at a rapid pace in their early years. This provides a critical foundation for lifelong progress, and the adults who provide for the care and education of children from birth through age 8 bear a great responsibility for their health, development, and learning.
